Denver’s heavy music scene is heralded (often to a nauseating degree) as one of the strongest and most prolific in the world, and rightfully so. In both its homegrown talent, and capacity to host touring artists, Denver is exceptional.
I have had the great fortune of photographing some of the moments in recent years that have helped bolster and perpetuate this reputation, and have collected a selection of them in The City Gasped. It is my hope that this book will recall fond memories of those good times at shows that currently seem so distant, strengthening our appreciation of them, and highlighting just how fleeting they can be. In the face of corporate consolidation, notably the drive of AEG and Live Nation to monopolize local scenes, I hope this book will serve to reinforce the importance of independent venues, and the vital role they play in fostering and maintaining truly accessible and vibrant music scenes. This will be worth keeping front of mind as live music returns, whatever that looks like. I know how special this time in Denver was, as do many of you, and I hope that I was able to capture a small sliver of that feeling in this zine.
More immediately, I hope that the proceeds from the sale of this book can provide a bit of relief to individuals and families in the Denver area who are struggling to obtain life’s most basic necessities. All proceeds will be donated to Metro Caring, a Denver organization that provides quality food to residents in need. As precious as this scene is to so many of us, it’s crucial to remember—as a fellow photographer recently pointed out—that being an artist, and having the time and resources to create art, is a luxury when contrasted with the struggle to stay alive. It is the city, and its citizens, after all, who’ve made any of this possible. The street runs both ways. - mg
